POSITION SUMMARYThe Research Technician will assist with compost and anaerobic digestion experiments at both lab and pilot scales. This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week), temporary internship, running from approximately May 1, 2023, through August 15, 2023. RESPONSIBLITIES & SCOPETo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Load commercial- and/or pilot-scale composter(s) with materials (e.g., fish mortalities, fish waste solids, and woodchips) by hand and/or with the assistance of heavy equipment (e.g., drills, pumps, mixers, and conveyer belts).
  • Assist with the setup of lab-scale experimental studies on anaerobic digestion and composting.
  • Assist with testing biogas samples on a gas chromatograph.
  • Collect samples from lab-scale and pilot-scale anaerobic digestion and composting experiments.
  • Extract and record data in Microsoft Excel or similar software.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Currently pursuing a diploma or bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Waste Management, or related discipline.
    • Prior experience in a laboratory setting, such as that found in college-level science courses.
    • Ability to maintain a high level of laboratory quality and safety standards.
    • Interest in waste treatment and waste conversion technologies.
    • Sensitivity to animal welfare issues.PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
      • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint computer applications.
      • Working knowledge and understanding of pumps, mixers, and basic plumbing. PHYSICAL DEMANDSThis position requires standing for long periods of time and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. The Research Technician will work in wet, hot, and/or humid conditions. WORK ENVIRONMENT
        • 70% of work is performed around water or in wet, hot, and/or humid conditions.
