Job Description:

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for assisting with the planning, coordination, and execution of a maintenance program for a golf course. Supervision of golf course maintenance workers is required. Work is performed under the general direction of the Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent with moderate latitude for independent judgment and action within guidelines provided by the Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent. Annual performance goals will be set for the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent.
Hiring Salary Range: $48,306.99 - $60,922.84
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assist with management of personnel:

Plan, direct, and control day to day work schedules of maintenance employees in the care and maintenance of golf course grounds and golf course maintenance equipment, including quality control.
Determine workload, assign priorities, schedule employees, and allocate resources.
Develop and implement training programs for employees.
Analyze and resolve employee work problems through application and interpretation of Personnel Policies.
Develop performance standards and indicators and evaluate employee performance against those standards.
Ensure adherence to fair and equitable employment practices.
Interview and recommend applicants for regular, full-time employment; interview and select applicants for part-time/seasonal employment.
Maintain employee time and attendance reports and performance records.
Promote high levels of work performance and employee morale.
Ensure the staff maintains required yearly safety training to include, but not limited to agency, local, state and federal regulatory pesticide and fertilizer compliance.
Communicate necessary golf course maintenance and staffing information to the Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent on a regular basis.

Assist with management of maintenance of grounds:

Establish and maintain schedules for and oversee routine grounds maintenance such as mowing and watering of greens, fairways, and tees.
Establish and maintain schedules for and oversee special maintenance operations and applications such as seeding, top-dressing, fertilization, and aeration of grounds.
Monitor and record irrigation and water well usage.
Identify and effectively treat turf damage and disease as directed by the Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent.
Select and purchase approved materials and assist in the coordination of quantity purchases for multiple sites.
Maintain comprehensive records of maintenance operations and related data.
Implement and oversee the safe and proper application of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and other materials as prescribed by the Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent.
Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications and for hazards.
Analyze work efficiency, recommend and initiate improvements when necessary.
Apply and interpret safety standards and ensure compliance.
Keep abreast of golf course maintenance standards and changes through annual education and training opportunities.
Advise park management personnel on turf management problems and course conditions.
Operate equipment and perform work of maintenance employees.

Assist with management of maintenance of equipment:

Oversee maintenance and repair of irrigation system.
Monitor wet-well and inspect pumping station equipment.
In conjunction with the golf course mechanic, establish and maintain schedules for and oversee routine maintenance of equipment such as sharpening of cutting blades, cleaning of equipment, and checking engine oil.
Establish and maintain schedules for and oversee annual overhauling of equipment which includes cleaning and replacing of worn parts.

Assist with development and management of budget:

Prepare and recommend annual budgets for golf course maintenance operations and capital improvements.
Interpret and apply NOVA Parks' policies and procedures to meet personnel, budget, property management, and general services needs of the golf course.
Monitor maintenance budget to ensure sound fiscal management.
Authorize procurement of required materials, equipment, parts and/or services.

Perform administrative duties:

Develop short- and long-term goals and recommend maintenance objectives, strategies and implementation plans.
Assist with the management of equipment inventory and maintenance through web based maintenance software.
Investigate accidents, theft, and vandalism and file appropriate reports in a timely manner.
Prepare and maintain various business, personnel, and administrative reports and records.
Prepare and maintain employee training records and certifications.
Maintain course daily log book.

Education: Graduation from two year college with Associates Degree in turf management, agronomy, or closely related field preferred.
Physical: Manual work with strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks, including lifting, stooping, bending and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions in outdoor and maintenance shop settings; will perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions; lift and move items equal to or greater than 80 pounds; climb ladders; use hand tools and operate mechanical equipment.Experience: Five years of experience in golf course maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, or experience which provides:

Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices used in golf course maintenance.
Knowledge and experience in personnel management.
Considerable knowledge of materials and equipment used in golf course maintenance.
Ability to identify, isolate, and initiate repairs to equipment.
Ability to identify and effectively treat turf damage and disease.
Ability to read and understand blueprints and other technical documents.
A participating knowledge of the game of golf and a reasonable understanding of the rules of the game.
Knowledge of potential hazards and safety precautions involved.
Knowledge of and ability to perform duties of all maintenance employees with skill in the operation of all related equipment.
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
Ability to interpret and explain NOVA Parks policies, rules, and procedures to employees.
Ability to deal effectively with the general public, private vendors, and other employees.
Working knowledge of personal computers and various software applications.
Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license with safe driving record.
Availability for call in emergency situations.
Availability to work additional hours during peak operating season including shift work and weekends.
Possession of or ability to obtain special licenses as required.
Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.
