Description: The Registered Nurse functions in a dual capacity. The
role includes serving in the preoperative area on assigned days.
Responsibilities in the preoperative area include IV initiation,
assessment, and patient education. On other scheduled days, the RN
works as a circulating nurse in the endoscopy suite. This ensures
safe, efficient, and patient-centered care. Patient ratios include
1:3 in the preoperative area and 1:1 as a circulator. The facility
is a trauma level I teaching hospital. The total number of staffed
beds is 228. Daily census includes care for adults and geriatrics.
The team rotates between pre-procedure and circulator assignments.
The special procedures performed include diagnostic and therapeutic
upper and lower endoscopy, ERCP, and EUS. Additional
responsibilities include biopsies and polypectomies. The RN will be
involved in patient education and pre-procedure care.
Interdisciplinary support includes respiratory services,
interpretation services, and pharmacy. Special equipment includes
endoscopy video towers, scopes, and electrosurgical units. The RN
will need experience with a variety of endoscopic procedures and
related equipment. Experience in monitoring conscious sedation and
IV insertion is essential. The unit supports a diverse range of
gastrointestinal diagnoses, including GERD and colorectal cancer. 5
